Located at Preston and Lynn Streets, where Zanzabar stands today, the Brown Bag was a laid-back Louisville staple through the '90s and early 2000s. Ran by the Nords of Nord’s Bakery right down the street, it served up crowd favorites like the half chicken, homemade chips, and hearty sides. Its casual, homey vibe made it a magnet for students, workers, and anyone looking for a solid meal and a low-key place to hang out.

Though its exact opening date is hard to pin down, the Brown Bag occupied a building with deep roots. After the Brown Bag’s closure in 2008, Zanzabar was revived by new tenants who brought back the name and spirit while updating the space into a full-fledged music venue. In the renovation process, the original 1950s tiled facade from the first Z-bar was uncovered, linking past and present in a tangible way. Since reopening, it has become one of Louisville’s most beloved small venues. It’s hosted a plethora of both local and national acts, arcade nights, and neighborhood gatherings, continuing the site's legacy as a hub of community.
