This past February, Shippingport Brewing and Sally Forth Taproom poured its last round and closed their doors for the final time. After opening in 2021, the brewery offered a comfortable, modest atmosphere and a wide selection of beers. Its walls were lined with traditional German beer steins, reminding guests of Louisville’s brewing heritage. Not a single table had matching chairs, making the space feel intimate almost as if you’re visiting someone’s home.

While the building itself is little more than just a concrete shell with a few doors and windows, Amelia, the driving force behind Shippingport transformed this space into a true third space for the community. Themed daily events, trivia nights, craft and stitch nights, small musical performances, and karaoke are among the many happenings that helped bring so many people together.

Shippingport had regulars from all around. Some came from downtown for lunch or a drink after work, while others came from nearby neighborhoods in Portland and Russel. Now that it has closed, who knows what will pop up next in the now-empty blue box at 1221 W. Main Street, but my fingers are crossed that it offers some of the same comforts and sense of community that made Shippingport Brewery a staple to so many.
